What I loved About This Interview
If you have not seen Amy Lee Segami’s artwork, you need to stop reading right now and look at it! It is incredible and so is she. Amy’s story of growing up with three grandmothers, two told her she was nothing, and her perseverance to find a voice in her life of someone who believed in her was incredible!
The lessons that Amy taught me in this conversation were life-changing. She helped me to understand why turbulence is needed for true transformation and helped me to see my own challenges in a new way. Her ability to paint lessons and meaning in her artwork and through her words is truly magical. This is an interview not to be missed!

These are questions that I asked Amy outside our interview. You are going to love her answers!
What is 1 thing you believe every woman entrepreneur should know?
If there is a will, there is a way.
When is a time in your life when you went through a challenge or felt like giving up?
During the sudden divorce after a 10 years marriage, I felt like a big failure. Rejected. Used. Tossed away.
How did you overcome this?
I decided that I could choose how I react to the uncertainty, the unexpected, and the unknown. Applied my own studio strategies to make the invisible visible. Ride the turbulence and move onward.
What did you learn from it?
When you are in the middle of the chaos and turbulence, it could be very scary, like riding a roller coaster. When I imagine it’s a flow, I know it will pass and I will be OK.
What is the one area of life or business you are an expert in?
Challenge the status quo by opening the mind’s eye of my clients to change their mindset, and transform their old belief system.
What is one thing you want to share about this that will make all the difference for women?
Mindset [belief system] is the foundation of building your own dream. If you believe in yourself, you can and will find a way.
What is one thing that you wish someone told you that you had to learn the hard way?
I wish someone had told me about the collaborative model early in my life. I used to believe that I have to do it on my own.
If you have a dream, you need a team. Work with those who are collaborative leaders. It’s a new leadership style that works with the new environment, instead of the fear-based or top-down leadership.
Most people are stuck in their own auto-mode or default mode.
Please tell me about your family. What is one of the biggest challenges you have faced with balancing work, family, and taking care of yourself?
One of the challenges when I was young was to honor my father’s wish for me to be in the technical field. Yet, my passion was in arts and culture. Eventually, I was able to find ways to merge art and science.
What did you learn from this challenge?
There is always a way. One does have to choose one over the other, at one given time. You need to collaborate in order to innovate and find a new solution.
What helps you balance these roles now?
Realize that there is a season for everything.
What is one resource that you love (a book, app, service)?
I am an App Addict.
Hoople or Libby for the library. Kindle for new books. Speechify which reads for you was a great help.
DropBox and Google Drive for collaborative work.
If you have written books or have a blog, what are the titles and where can I find them?
A picture is worth a thousand words. Instead of books, I have published paintings to open one’s mind and one’s eye. See samples artwork at PaingintOnWater.com
The upcoming book is about Studio Strategies™ for business and life.
The talk about problem-solving at the inaugural TEDxPeachtree 10 years ago, What if you could paint on water?
If you have written several books, which one is most relevant to women intrapreneurs and entrepreneurs?
Culture leaves clues to society.
Looking back to move forward.
If you have written a book, would you recommend self-publishing or traditional publishing & why?
Absolutely self-publishing, in fact, I coach people on this! For speed, control, and financial benefits.
