More About This
Have you ever wondered why we set goals on January 1st and then, within about a month, we have forgotten those ambitions? I’m sure we can all relate to having things we want to accomplish in life, but never do because we either never get started, or stop working on them when we hit walls and roadblocks. It is not that we are lazy or bad people, it is just human nature to focus on what is in front of us and do the thing that is the least painful. The challenge is that oftentimes the thing that is the easiest or least painful is typically the thing that keeps us from growing and accomplishing great things. It is that thing that keeps us stuck in self-doubt, procrastination, or giving up. So, how then do we push past the times when it gets tough? How do we keep momentum even through the chaos of real life? There are a couple of things we can do to help us get clear with our goals and stay in momentum, so we predictably achieve what we want most. I have found this goal setting system works in every context of life. I have used it in my business to increase profit, write this book, and take my relationships to new heights.
I initially had inspiration come to me that I should write this book, but found it difficult to get started and stay in momentum. I would do great for a couple of days and then life would get in the way. I would have the same old excuses (not enough time, energy, knowledge…the list could go on and on) and I would stop. My progress was so slow that I remember thinking that the book might be finished by just before my 95th birthday! Then I learned about the 5 steps to achieving goals, and I finally understood how I could set myself up to win. Using this 5 step process, I decided that a reward for hitting my targets would be that I could have a shower after I wrote a section of this book. I remember one time, it was about 10:30 at night and my husband found me frantically writing in my book. He knew that I would not typically be writing that late, so he said to me,
I told him,
“I am writing in my book because I really want a shower!”
As you can imagine, this was highly motivating, and I got my book writing session done!
Even though the 5 steps to achieving goals worked most of the time, I wasn’t perfect at it. There was another time I didn’t write in my book and so couldn’t have a shower, but I really needed to quickly run into Costco. So, I threw my hair up in a ponytail, put on some clothes, and ran out the door. While I was at the grocery store, I saw someone that I knew. At that moment, a mental checklist raced through my mind…
“Did I remember to put on deodorant, is my shirt clean, I think I have baby spit on me, did I even comb my hair today?
Let me tell you, my friends, it only takes a couple of times of running into people you know while running through the stinky clothes mental checklist before you are willing to meet any goal so you can get a shower! After that I recommitted to the 5- step process and, using it, finally wrote the book. That is the power of this principle. When we know how to take constant, consistent steps towards our goal and know how to motivate ourselves even when it is hard to get it done, we can achieve any objective. Since then I have used various motivators to help me get tasks done; such as not being able to go on social media or check my phone, until I followed through on my daily goal.
So, what are the 5 steps to achieving goals? Before we dive into the specifics, we need to understand how the psychology of the 5 steps work, and why it works. The first challenge we run into when we are setting goals is that we create broad statements of what we want to accomplish. We rarely get specific, so it is exceptionally difficult to know if we have achieved our goal or not. We aren’t always clear on how we’re actually going to achieve the goal. We oftentimes don’t come up with a specific contingency plan to ensure there is nothing stopping us from succeeding from quitting. This is what the 5 steps are for; to help us be specific, get creative about how we’re going to accomplish our goal, and create a sense of urgency that gets the job done.
Here are the 5 five steps to achieving goals:
- Specific – What is one specific goal you have?
- Motivation – What reward will you get if you do it? What consequence will you get if you don’t do it?
- Accountable – What will you do to be accountable to this goal?
- Realistic – How is this goal realistic & measurable?
- Timely – Set a deadline for when you will accomplish your goal.
Now, you may have heard of S.M.A.R.T. goals before, but I can guarantee that no one executes on their smart SMART goals quite as well as I will explain right now.
Let’s say you want to be healthier. You would set a specific goal like:
“I am going to eat 3 healthy meals and 2 healthy snacks every day.”
You would set a motivator that would help you do it:
“If I eat the healthy meals and snacks for the day, I can eat my favorite fruit after dinner.”
You set a motivator that would increase the sense of urgency:
“For every meal or snack I eat that is not healthy, I will pay $1 to charity.”
You make yourself accountable by telling someone else, such as your husband or a friend, how much money you paid to a charity that day. You make sure the goal you set is something that you can realistically do. You set a time:
“I am going to do this for the next 30 days.”
Most people that set goals don’t put in a motivator and so it is so easy to quit when the goal gets tough. It is your secret ingredient to being a Woman with Fire because it will help you move past the walls you hit and will drive you forward to achieve any goal!
