What I loved About This Interview

Hearing Rachel’s story was incredible! Her willingness to share her feelings and the lessons she has learned from parenting kids who have disabilities was so inspiring. Her insight into the magic that her daughter Mary brings to the world because of who she gives me goosebumps!

I also loved our discussion about how she has been able to put herself first so she could be the person she wants to be for her kids.

In this interview, I asked Rachel what she would say to other moms who have kids dealing with disabilities and her advice was both profound and inspiring. Rachel has an incredible balance of real and hope in her message. This interview will leave you inspired, uplifted, and on the search for a little of the magic that Mary & Rachel share with the world.

Who is Rachel Halgren?

Rachel Halgren is a mother of 4 who has been married for almost 17 years. She has a very fiery outgoing personality. She raises special needs children, who although are sometimes difficult to handle, are her favorite people in the world! She is a “momapreneur” who loves the fashion and beauty industry, self-love, being outdoors, and being with people that make her feel happy. She’s a hair junkie and almost never looks the same because as she says, “Life is too short to not have pink hair”!

Rachel & her daughter Mary own an apparel company. When I met Rachel & Mary, I knew their story had to be told. This is how Rachel describes Mary: “Ever since she was little Mary was special. And not just the “special” term we think of when it comes to mentally handicap. She’s that too, and we are not ashamed to own that. But just special. Like she makes you wanna smile. When you are around her, you wonder what she is thinking about that makes her wanna giggle to herself while drawing a picture. Why she loves to dress fancy and twirl while watching her skirt flow in motion. You feel drawn to her, and when you leave, you remember her. There is no one quite like her. Like really. And her magic, we wanna share a little bit of that with the world.”

Bonus Wisdom

What is 1 thing you believe every woman entrepreneur should know?

I believe every woman entrepreneur needs to know that it’s okay to be different. But there’s no one single box that you need to fit in.

When is a time in your life when you went through a challenge or felt like giving up?

When my oldest daughter was very young and being diagnosed with several neurological disorders, it was horrible. You just felt like her whole life and your whole life flash before your eyes and it was over. Lost all your dreams and hopes for her. I felt like a horrible mom and you stuck out everywhere you went.

How did you overcome this?

Overcoming it took many years, lots of prayers and lots of support from other moms who had been through the same thing and saw the light at the end of the tunnel.

What did you learn from it?

I learned that she is still an incredible person despite mental handicap Ness and has so much to offer the world. I’ve also seen how much he has challenged me to be a better person and to reach out and help others going through the same experience.

What is the one area of life or business you are an expert in?

I feel one area that I am an expert in is taking care of myself. I make sure I put myself together every single day, my biggest thing is to be intentional every day!! Don’t be a victim of time or intention.

What is one thing that you wish someone told you that you had to learn the hard way?

One thing that I had wished someone had told me was how hard motherhood was. It was always idealized that it is so wonderful and such a blessing, but nobody told me about all the heartache crying yourself to sleep and how hard it would be to raise little human beings.

Please tell me about your family. What is one of the biggest challenges you have faced with balancing work, family, and taking care of yourself?  What did you learn from this challenge?

My family is very multi-dimensional since all of my kids are very different and have different needs. It means that you have to parent one each a little bit differently, which isn’t fair to me or to them and it’s hard to understand but it’s just the way that it is. Me and my husband don’t naturally click so we have to make everyday work to understand each other and be partners since we look at life so differently. Every day is a different balancing act of having time for myself while taking care of everybody else and our small businesses. But I love being busy and I love working for what I want, I don’t stand around and wait for things to get done for me.

One of the ways that I stay balanced is with needy kids haha! They make sure that I don’t get too sucked into myself or my work by demanding my attention!

What is one resource that you love (a book, app, service)?
