What Failure Helps Us Accomplish

What You Will Learn In This Episode

In this episode, AJ shares what has helped her heal from an unstable childhood so she could create a loving relationship with her husband and a successful business. AJ reveals how she is able to take care of herself while she is juggling her business, her family, and how she finds time to take care of herself.

What I loved About This Interview

I appreciated AJ’s willingness to be vulnerable and share about the challenges she has gone through growing. Her ability to share insights on what she learned from these challenging points in her life was incredible. I appreciated AJ’s advice for finding ways to take care of ourselves, even when life is crazy and there are little fingers under the door when we moms are trying to use the bathroom…I mean seriously; sometimes there is just not a moment to ourselves! Moms, you know what I’m talking about!
AJ’s ability to draw lessons from times that she has experienced failure in the past was inspiring. Her ability to find lessons in those failures and find the strength and courage to keep going is incredible. Her willingness to be vulnerable, to share how she was able to take down her guard and let her husband into her emotional world was so powerful.

I’m grateful for the time I got to connect with AJ talking about the issues that all “mamapreneurs” face…finding time to take care of ourselves, how to keep going when life gets hard, and how to learn from our failures.

Bonus Wisdom

These are questions that I asked AJ outside our interview. You are going to love her answers!

What are 3 things you believe every woman entrepreneur should know?

It’s up to you to create and maintain your own individual success routine. When something no longer serves you, it’s ok to let it go – businesses, relationships, or otherwise. It’s ok to fail and fail often.

What is the greatest challenge you have overcome in your life and what did you learn from it?

My childhood was less than perfect. My Mom was/is still mentally unstable but I’ve learned how to address it since then. My dad worked as a farmer and was paid very little. There was quite a lack of mindset and only the emotions of anger and rage shown at home. Most of my childhood was spent in severe poverty and emotional trauma. The first time I visited Florida my senior year of high school, I knew the world was different and better. I knew at all costs I was going to rise above those experiences. No matter what happened in my life after that, I was the only person I counted on. I worked many jobs at once, I donated plasma despite my severe fear of needles (I pass out at the sight of them), I gave time and attention to men who would buy me time and a few experiences to get me further in my journey. I did basically everything to not go back to the life I grew up knowing all while attending college. My Junior Year, spring semester, I had a little girl, named Leila. Life then changed because it wasn’t just me anymore. I knew I had to do better for her. I worked full time, went to school full time, and raised this baby full time – starting 2 weeks after her birth. I then took the opportunity to take a job in Arizona, a long way from Indiana, without any support or family close. After a few months working there, the owner and I realized we were on the same path and ended up dating and eventually marrying. Then we opened up other businesses and had a baby together. The rest is history.

What is the one area of life you are most passionate about?

I am super passionate about spending time with my family and helping my kiddos grow and learn in ways that I did and didn’t. I’m also passionate about empowering other strong women to do the same as I did – to get out of their own way and create the life they desire and deserve.

What is one thing that you wish someone told you that you had to learn the hard way?

Failing isn’t the end. Failing means you have the opportunity to start again and take the lessons and learn from them so you can do better next time.

What helps you balance your work, family, and taking care of yourself?

I’m an early bird – I get my day started and halfway complete before 6 am. I gather my thoughts have me-time, self-care, and complete a lot of tasks while my family is still sleeping. This looks different day-to-day, but it helps me maintain the balance of all the businesses, rehabbing our new home, mom and wife responsibilities, and doing things I’m passionate about. Without this, I don’t have a clear mind and feel like my list never gets complete.

What is one resource that you love (a book, app, service)?

I check in with the app, The Secret, each morning because it helps me grow my money mindset (always a work in progress) and affirm that anything is possible if we are grateful, positive, and filling our minds with good.
