What I loved About This Interview

As you listen to this interview you will hear me say “I love that” about a million times. Sorry in advance, but I really did love what Laurie was talking about, and just couldn’t contain my excitement! She is extremely skilled in her craft, and has impressive accomplishments; and yet the thing I appreciate most about Laurie is that she is real, her heart is huge, and she is genuinely seeking to help women feel empowered through finding their style.

During this interview, I felt like I was hanging out with a great friend and talking about all the things that women think, but don’t talk about. I love that Laurie was willing to talk about body image and the effect it has on women. She was willing to be vulnerable and share her own struggles with body image and finding her way in the world. Her ability to weave real and raw stories in with concrete and savvy style advice was just incredible.

My only regret with this interview is that I didn’t have another hour with Laurie because I was having so much fun! You are going to love hearing Laurie and learning from her!

Bonus Wisdom

These are questions that I asked Laurie outside our interview. You are going to love her answers!

What is 1 thing you believe every woman entrepreneur should know?

That style is your visual business card.

When is a time in your life when you went through a challenge or felt like giving up?

So many times!! I’ve been a “solo-preneur” personal stylist running my business for a decade. I’ve made huge mistakes, I’ve made no money, I’ve applied for jobs, I fell apart. I’ve been through it all. I can speak to a trip I took to Paris in 2015, which is when I feel like everything changed for me. I was broke, business was dead, and I was single & 35. I took everything I had left in my savings and took myself for my birthday to Paris.

How did you overcome this?

In general, for all the falls, I’ve always broken down and then got myself back up again. Brushed my knees off and took shaky steps forward.

For the trip to Paris – I allowed myself to be imperfect and go with the wind.  I stopped trying to control everything. I let go.

What did you learn from it?

I learned that up until that point, I had been letting life pass me by. I focused solely on work and nothing else, hustling day and night to make ends meet. I was letting my life run me, I wasn’t running my life. I learned that life is meant to be lived and it was the first time I discovered that balance, space, and walking away from my work was the healthiest thing I could do for myself. And from there, my business blossomed.

What is the one area of life or business you are an expert in?

I am an expert in style and empowerment through the art of style. I get women. I get insecurities. I’ve seen it all and experienced it all myself.

What is one thing you want to share about this that will make all the difference for women?

That the fit of your jackets are the most important and the quickest thing you can do to update your wardrobe.

What is one thing that you wish someone told you that you had to learn the hard way?

That it is way harder trying to be like everyone else and trying to fit into a perfect mold of somebody else when I could be the most brilliant mold of myself.

Please tell me about your family.

I met the love of my life at the age of 35.  We’ve been happily married for over a year and are expecting our first child in the spring of 2019. I grew up in Los Angeles and have the most amazing parents who have supported me and believed in me through all the ups and downs of my career.

What is one of the biggest challenges you have faced with balancing work, family, and taking care of yourself?

General Answer: I am always so dedicated to others, so my biggest challenge is putting myself first. But being pregnant has been a really amazing lesson in how to receive. And to be an open receptacle for it.

Style related answer:  Learning how to style myself and my new body being pregnant. I’ve always had insecurity and body issues, and my pregnant body triggers a lot of insecurities for me. So learning how to restyle myself has been a challenge I am still working through.

What did you learn from this challenge?

General Answer: That when I take care of myself, life is easier, life flows, and I overall am happier and more fulfilled.

Style related Answer: That it’s okay not to be perfect. That it’s okay to not really have it all together all the time. But the best part is as I am learning through it, I am planning to write a book about, style, pregnancy, and changing bodies.

What helps you balance these roles now?

General Answer: Friends help me balance. Being with my girls; my tribe always brings me back to me. Who you are in a relationship can be amazing; but the woman you get to be with your girlfriends, it’s a whole different ball game.

Style related answer: Accepting myself and owning what I’ve got. Owning my outfits (good or bad), and owning my imperfections and just letting it all be. When I take the stress of perfection away, I take the stress away altogether.

If you have written books or have a blog, what are the titles and where can I find them?

I just finished writing my first book this year!! The release date is TBD, but if you sign up for my newsletter you’ll be the first to know!  It’s a book about style, empowerment and how you can change your life, by changing your experience with yourself and your wardrobe. The book is a game changer. The Marie Kondo of wardrobe.
