How to Be A Successful Woman Leader

What You Will Learn In This Episode

In this episode, Dr. Dorothy Martin-Neville, reveals the mindset and skills women need to know to successfully lead. She will uncover the one thing that holds women back from leading. Dorothy shares how women can step up to their potential by embracing the edge of their comfort zone. She shares her powerful story of how she overcame the struggles of being an orphan and later adoption into a family with a mother and grandmother who didn’t want her. She illuminates the power of the human spirit, the strength that comes from struggles, and the courage that comes from being willing to keep moving forward towards our dreams.

What I loved About This Interview

I loved talking with Dr. Dorothy Martin-Neville because she so sincerely wants to share her knowledge to empower women to lead and step into their best selves. Our discussion about why some women try to hold other women down to succeed, while other women strive to support and uplift other women was so insightful.

Her story of growing up in a family where she was not wanted in the home (set outside by herself for the entire day, so that her grandmother did not see her) was such a powerful story of the resilience of the human spirit. When she shared her lessons from that difficult childhood and how it shaped her to become who she is today, I was blown away by her humility and willingness to learn from all experiences. The knowledge she revealed about how to create a path to reach our dreams is so powerful. I am truly grateful for our conversation, and I often gather strength and courage from the lessons she shared with me during this interview. I know you are going to love it!

Bonus Wisdom

These are questions that I asked Dorothy outside our interview. You are going to love her answers!

What is 1 thing you believe every woman entrepreneur should know?

She has to keep expanding her energetic footprint to keep growing into higher and higher levels of success.

When is a time in your life when you went through a challenge or felt like giving up?

Pick one. As an entrepreneur, as a woman, as a mother, there are challenges everywhere. One, perhaps the biggest, was professional. I have founded 4 companies. After 19 successful years, one of them went bankrupt.  I was absolutely devastated. I identified with that company more than any of the others. I had numbers of people on my payroll and I was a pioneer in my field. I was working with someone to sell the company to a group that would take the locations throughout the country and many, many problems developed.

How did you overcome this?

I took two years, I believe, to come out of shock, to deal with all the legal ramifications of closing an Institute approved by the CT Department of Higher Education, and to support my students in graduating.

What did you learn from it?

So many things. I learned to let go of something when you are truly complete with it, rather than holding on for the “perfect time.”  I learned that even vetting people doesn’t mean they always stay in integrity. I learned we are all human and all we can do is our best at any given moment. I learned that true friends ride with you through anything. I learned that when you are being called elsewhere and don’t listen, the Spirit will support you in getting to where you need to be one way or another. I learned life goes on, and you can always come out the other side wiser, smarter, and freer.

What is the one area of life or business you have expertise in?

Calling others to see themselves as they truly are, as I help them develop the mindset and communication skills needed in order to be powerful, and impactful leaders. The name of my most recent book is Letting the Good Girl Die so the Real Women Can Live, addresses the way in which all women, CEOs in major organizations, or new entrepreneurs betray themselves, and possibly set themselves up to fail.

What is one thing that you wish someone told you that you had to learn the hard way?

Follow your own heart, always; never betray who you are to make another happy. You know your truth; listen to it!

Please tell me about your family.

I was raised in an orphanage and later adopted and raised in the housing projects. In that family, I am blessed with 3 brothers and a sister. I have 2 children and 3 grand-children.

What is one of the biggest challenges you have faced with balancing work, family, and taking care of yourself & what did you learn from it?

ALWAYS take care of yourself. The laundry is going nowhere. Two days of dirt on the floor is not a crisis. Your children will survive 2 pizzas in one week on occasion.

What helps you balance these roles now?

Recognition of my own needs. My children are older so EVERY Sunday night – regardless of what else is happening – is family dinner. I need that connection and I need to be a part of their lives. My son lives a plane ride away, but speaking to him weekly is a necessity, so I do. That is a big part of my self-care, as is speaking with girlfriends and laughing with them.

What is one resource that you love (a book, app, service)?

Books from other experts with the same value system.
